Noon of Mar 23 2013, SW Madison Street and SW 3rd Avenue, North of Terry Schrunk Plaza.
Note: Downtown Portland street grid is very small. In general, one block is 200x200ft, only about 3,600 square meters. Usually, the streets are narrow, about 60ft wide, and most of them are one way. Even though, some streets have 7ft wide separated bicycle lane, and painted to green. Some intersections have enlarged “Bicycle Box”.
Update: I thought it is a sort of “Street Art”. But thanks for kind reminder, in America, it’s usually a “shrine” for people who were killed on bicycles. Through quick search, I found the tragedy behind this. In May 16 2012, 28-year-old cyclist Kathryn Rickson was killed by a 18-wheeler truck which was turning right. It seems people are still arguing about who should responsible for this. Here are several links I found:
- Woman dies after collision with 18-wheeler on SW Madison
- Fatal bike crash in downtown Portland: No criminal charges for truck driver
Last fall, I took a class called Pedestrian and Bicycle Planning, and I felt that American experts considered safety details very carefully. But when I know there was a crash just nearby, it’s really a shock. And more horrible, it seems no body should be responsible for it, and it may be inevitable in similar situation. What’s a mess!
